Michael J. Schmalz, M.D., FACG, FASGE, AGAF

Dr. Michael Schmalz is board certified in Internal Medicine (1986) and Gastroenterology (1989) with a special interest in hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. He has written many articles and book chapters pertaining to these conditions. His undergraduate training was received at Marquette University and he is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin where he also completed his gastroenterology fellowship.

Dr. Schmalz holds positions on various professional committees, Fellow status with the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and American Gastroenterological Association and is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is President of GI Associates (2008 – present), the largest independent gastroenterology practice in Wisconsin. GI Associates has 30 physicians and operates 6 free standing endoscopy centers in southeastern Wisconsin.

Dr. Schmalz was chairman of the section of Gastroenterology at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center (1997 – 2009) and served as Governor of Wisconsin for the American College of Gastroenterology (2004-2010). He is a founding Board member of the Digestive Health Physicians Association (DHPA). Dr. Schmalz has also been chosen as one of the “The Best Doctors in America” and “Best Doctors in Milwaukee.”

He enjoys speaking to people on the community level and has traveled nationally and internationally to speak to his peers professionally regarding the most current treatments and procedures available today in treating patients who suffer from gastrointestinal illness.
